The Bust of Pavlos Melas

In the courtyard of Metropolis of Kastoria a bust of Pavlos Melas has been placed. Pavlos Melas was born on 29 March 1870. He was an officer in the artillery of the Greek army. He was an offspring of a prominent family of Epirus born in Marseille, France. He studied in Athens, in Cadet School (1886-1891), where he graduated as a second lieutenant of Artillery. He was the son of Michael Melas and son –in-law of Stefanos Dragoumis. He was one of the most important pioneers of the Macedonian struggle and died under mysterious circumstances during operations in Macedonia on 13 October 1904. In Greece he is considered to be a heroic figure and the village Melas in Kastoria and the Municipality of Pavlos Melas in central Macedonia have been named after him.
