The ruins of Chalara

The Chalara village, with older name Pozntivistia, had approximately 900 residents in1878 .It is a mountain village (alt. 870. 57 inhab.) (2001) of Kastoria. It is located at the northern end of the county, 26 km. north of the city of Kastoria through the provincial road Vissinias -Gavros. The transition is done through the vertical axis of the Egnatia Road , Siatista-Krystallopigi bar at the node Gavros. The village belongs to Korestia, known as "mud-brick villages", which is a cluster of mountainous settlements (Upper and Lower Kraniona, Chalara , Melas, Makrochori, Mafrokampos, St. Antonios, Gavros , Kottas and Vatochori), one finds mainly on the road which connects Kastoria to Prespa. The Korestia villages show strong architectural and cultural interest thanks to the brick houses with its characteristic red color, which one meets there. The houses were built by craftsmen in the first half of the last century with mud from red soil, water and straw. Today they are crumbling, abandoned, and surrendered to the mercy of time and weather.
